Hydraulics at express speed from Brønderslev to Seoul

Four tonnes and a volume equivalent to two hefty Mercedes. Those were the dimensions of the hydraulics station loaded on to the plane to Korea by Serman & Tipsmark in June 2014

Back in January 2014, Serman & Tipsmark were invited to submit a tender for the hydraulics for a Floating Production Unit (FPU). Subsequently, things moved quickly. The order was secured, and less than six months later Serman & Tipsmark were ready to send the massive hydraulics station on a plane to Korea.

A floating oil stationThe completed FPU will be sited off the coast of Congo. Here, it will function as a staging post between an oil platform and the tankers that carrying oil ashore. The FPU is owned by the French oil company, Total, and will be built in Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries. The hydraulics from Serman & Tipsmark will be installed in the associated anchoring system that is being supplied by Norwegian company, MacGregor Pusnes AS.

Building blocks in the right orderEven though the FPU isn't expected to be ready until the end of 2015, the hydraulics station has to be delivered now, explains Sales Manager Mark van den Bosch from Serman & Tipsmark:

"In simple terms, the ship will be built around the equipment. And they need the hydraulics station now because it will be somewhat below deck on the ship."

The correct colour of cablesThe hydraulics have to meet specifications from MacGregor Pusnes AS, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Total. And the fact that there are so many specific wishes to be fulfilled is illustrated by Mark van den Bosch with a funny anecdote:

"We had fitted grey cables, as we were instructed. It turned out that they should have been blue. Consequently, we had to rip all the cables out and replace them with blue ones". So, it just shows the amount of detail involved.

He emphasises that the collaboration with the various parties has been first class:

"We hope that we will hear more from MacGregor Pusnes AS in the future".
