Hydraulic Power Units for New Vessel

Background and Need

The customer was preparing to take delivery of new vessels for their fleet, which created the need for complete hydraulic power units. Hydraulics are a critical part of onboard operations – powering winches, cranes, and other key functions essential for safe and efficient work at sea.

Why Serman & Tipsmark?

The customer has worked closely with Serman & Tipsmark for many years, making us a natural choice as supplier. Mutual trust and our strong knowledge of their existing systems made it the right decision to continue the collaboration for this project.

The Solution

To ensure reliability and familiarity, the customer received a solution that is 100% identical to a system we previously supplied for another vessel. This allows both crew members and service technicians to switch between vessels without extra training or adaptation.

Specifications:

Station 1: 2 x 86 kW motors, 2 x 255 L/min up to 350 bar (constant pressure)

Station 2: 4 x 86 kW motors, 4 x 255 L/min up to 350 bar (load-sensing control)

Application

The systems cover the vessel’s complete hydraulic needs, including winch and crane operations – critical functions in the customer’s daily operations.

Our Contribution

Serman & Tipsmark supplied and documented the complete hydraulic power units for the vessel.
In addition to the power units, we also supplied almost all hydraulic components for the vessel from leading brands such as Bosch Rexroth, Parker, Danfoss, and SUN – including directional valves, manifolds, and transmitters.

Customer Benefits

Familiarity: Identical system as on a previous vessel, simplifying operation and service.

Reliability: Proven solution already tested in practice.

Efficiency: Load-sensing station ensures demand-based performance and reduces energy consumption.

All-in-one solution: Covers all hydraulic functions on the vessel in a single integrated package.

Reduced spare parts inventory: Many of the customer’s vessels share the same components.

Challenges and Solutions

"Safety and redundancy are of utmost importance on a vessel. Serman & Tipsmark delivered both the hydraulic system and the complete PLC control for the vessel’s SPLIT function. The design has been thoroughly tested on several of the customer’s vessels and includes monitoring and emergency operation."

"The solution is robust and approved by Bureau Veritas."

Challenges and Solutions

"A key factor in the project was on-time delivery, enabling the customer to handle integration and commissioning themselves. This was achieved through thorough planning and close dialogue with the customer."

"On a vessel like this, it is essential that every component fits 100% into the ship’s design. This makes the installation work easier and saves the customer valuable time. To achieve this, brackets, welds, and pipe placements were carefully agreed during a close design process with the customer."

Dennis Engelund Rasmussen, Project Engineer - Serman & Tipsmark
